About the artist
Hello, my name is Emma Smyth. I am a 23 year old, Scottish contemporary artist. I was born on the 9th of May, 2002 and grew up in the West of Scotland. I have practiced art from a very young age. Once leaving school in 2020, I decided to pursue my artistic abilities at City of Glasgow college the same year. I studied Contemporary Art Practice at HNC and HND level before studying and achieving my BA (HONS) degree in 2024. I am currently working towards my future career as a Contemporary Art lecturer. I will begin studying my Masters of Letters in Contemporary Art Practice at The Glasgow School of Art. Within my current practice I have predominantly experiment with paint and manipulation techniques to convey sinister and eerie subject matter. I consider myself to have a mixed media practice as I utilise a verity of other mediums. I plan to continue experimenting with painting using a variety of techniques, styles, subject matter, and concepts. Revisiting my drawing skills focusing on the human form and portraiture, in order to develop my painting style and skills. I have experimented with brighter subject matters by creating paintings inspired by the beautiful scenery and wildlife within Scotland. The desire to explore this subject matter was sparked during my visit to Orkney. I continue to develop my artistic practice, open to welcoming new ideas and ways of working.
